#1 – Oura Ring

Challenger #1

OURA Stealth

The Oura smart ring was designed to help people find their perfect sleeping habit, and since it’s release, it’s done just that.

Oura ring uses NTC (negative temperature coefficient) sensors to help track your body temperature every minute while you sleep.

Taking full advantage of the sensors enables you to fix any problems you might be having with your sleep.

On the inside of the smart ring, you’ll notice three infrared LEDs that measure the pulse from the palmar arteries in your fingers.

You also have a 3D accelerometer and gyroscopes, which tracks your movements and the intensity of your workout.

Oura rings are made using ultra-lightweight titanium, which is 4-6 grams lighter than your average ring. You have four colors you can choose from Silver, Black, Stealth, and Diamond. Each color selection is available in eight ring sizes from 6-13.

Key Features

  • Automatic sleep tracking
  • Made with a lightweight titanium
  • Four colors
  • Eight sizes
  • Bedtime guidance
  • NTC temperature sensor
  • Sleep stages
  • On-demand heart rate tracking

What Other People Say

The data the ring provides was immensely valuable and helped them alter their sleeping habits as and when they needed it. Another customer mentioned how much they loved the design, and even more, loved wearing it; even when they weren’t sleeping.

One customer wanted to mention it was not a fitness tracking smart ring, although it did give you insights into your daily activity. They also liked the fact they only need to charge the ring once a week, and that the ring could hold well over a week’s worth of data.

Final Verdict

One of my favorite parts of the ring (other than the sleep tracking) is the stylish design, which remains minimalistic unless you opt for the “look at me” diamond ring. Each color and design is left with a fantastic finish, sure to wow all your friends and family.

The best feature, in my opinion, was the NTC temperature sensor; it worked perfectly at recording your body temperature. The cooling of the body is what helps us get a good night’s sleep. It also worked in conjunction with the activity tracker to help you sleep better.

What We Liked

  • Accurate sleep tracking
  • Stylish design
  • Fitness tracking

What We Didn’t Like

  • Doesn't monitor heart rate regularly

#2 – Motiv Ring

Challenger #2

Motiv Rose Gold

It offers a discreet yet stylish way of tracking your workouts and sleep.

Their smart rings give 24/7 assistance in monitoring the steps and distance you’ve walked along with heart rate, calories burned, and sleep monitoring.

You can keep track of all this data using the Motiv app.

The ring is waterproof to 165ft and weights less than a penny. The sleek and robust design means you don’t have to worry about it breaking.

It’s made using ultralight titanium, which is available in three different colors Silver, Black, or Rose Gold.

The ring lasts for three days from a 90-minute charging cycle. To charge the smart ring, it uses a USB magnetic charging dock. To add a layer of security for your accounts, it uses two-step verification to make sure your data stays protected.

Key Features

  • Waterproof up to 165 ft
  • Three-day battery life
  • Made with an ultra-light titanium
  • Fitness tracker
  • Seven sizes
  • 90-minutes charging time
  • USB magnetic charging
  • Sleep tracking

What Other People Say

One customer loved how easy it was to pair the device to your smartphone; it felt effortless and took very little time. They also loved how lightweight the smart ring was. You could barely notice it was there, which made a nice change compared to some of the chunkier rings.

Another customer claimed it changed the way they lived life; it helped them keep to their fitness goals, and adjust their sleeping habits. But it wasn’t all roses; some people were having trouble with charging the device; it didn’t hold the connection very well.

Final Verdict

For me, the Motiv smart ring worked well in all areas. It gave you great insights into your health and daily habits while allowing you to make changes and adjustments when needed. The best part was how accurate the smart ring was at activity tracking.

My main concern with this ring was the charging stand; it loses connection far too easily, which I’ll put down to a weak magnetic strip. Overall the build quality was good (other than the charging hub); the ring was durable and best of all its waterproof up to 165 ft.

What We Liked

  • Two-step online security
  • Fitness tracking
  • Waterproof

What We Didn’t Like

  • Loses connection when charging

Things They Have In Common

Let’s start with both rings are exceptionally well designed and look very stylish.  Both smart rings use ultra-lightweight titanium to make sure the ring stays durable without adding too much weight.

They also both offer similar color variations, although the Oura does comes with an extra one.

And it doesn’t stop there, both devices have sleep tracking abilities, that being said Oura outperforms Motiv, but we’ll get into that a little later on.

They both track your daily activity, but this is were the Motiv wins, it tracks the distance you’ve covered as well as steps you’ve achieved for the day.

Head To Head

This is the section where we put the two devices head to head to find out which of the smart rings performs the best. I’ve picked five categories to put them up against each over.

Let’s see who wins:

Price

It can be the deciding factor for most people, which is why I thought we should get out the way first. If you’re looking for the cheaper ring, then the Motiv wins at $199.99, which is considerably less expensive than the $299-$999 Oura ring.

One thing I’d like to note, even though the Oura ring might seem like the expensive option, especially if you’re looking at the diamond incrusted Oura ring. Luckily when you get into the features of the Oura ring, you get far more than some diamond stones. But, judging the smart rings solely on price, there can only be one winner.

Winner: Motiv

Sleep Tracking

The Oura ring really comes into its own when it comes to sleep tracking. It tracks your sleep through the three stages of sleep; deep, REM, and light sleep, and determines the timing, duration, and quality of your sleep. To help with your sleep, the Oura ring tracks respiratory rate, breathing variance, and body temperature deviation.

The Motiv ring isn’t quite as high tech when it comes to sleep tracking; it will track the duration you were asleep for, but not what stages of sleep you were in, which is why the Oura Wins this battle.

Winner: Oura

Battery Life

The longer the battery can last in your smart ring, the better, especially when you’re using it as a sleep tracker (we all know charging takes place when we’re asleep. You can expect to get 7 seven days of activity from the Oura ring, which is impressive when you consider the three days you get with Motiv.

It’s not the only issue Motiv has when it comes to the battery. It has a severe problem of disconnecting when you are trying to charge the device.

Winner: Oura

Additional Features

When it comes to additional features, they both have their own advantages. The Oura ring focuses its features on helping you get a better night sleep by utilizing the following features:

  • Night-time ECG-level
  • Resting heart rate
  • Interbeat interval
  • Heart rate variability
  • Movements and daily rhythms
  • Intensity, timing, and length of physical activity
  • And much more

The Motiv ring was designed to track your daily health and activity data; it does this by using the following features:

  • Tracking your active minutes
  • Calories burned
  • Activity intensity/type
  • Distance and steps

As you might be able to see the Oura ring has plenty of options when it comes to an additional feature, but let’s face it, with the high price you wouldn’t expect anything else.

Winner: Oura

Sizing

Let’s talk about sizes, if we’re talking about the overall size, then the Motiv ring is slightly smaller than the Oura, but only just and it’s barely noticeable. So what about the actual sizings? Well, Oura offers the sizes from 6-13, and Motiv is available in sizes 6-12.

Unless you have a chunky finger, it’s unlikely you’ll have any sizing issues no matter which one you choose. One thing that’s worth mentioning is, both companies state they don’t use the standard ring sizing charts. But the Oura ring seems to closer to the usual ring sizes.

Luckily both companies will send you a sizing kit when you purchase the ring.

Winner: Oura

Final Verdict: Oura Vs Motiv

Now, the Oura Ring did come with the high price tag, but it also offered a lot more than the Motiv.

The battery could last 4 days longer than it’s competitor. And at the charger didn’t have any problems connecting.

I was also a massive fan of the NTC body temperature sensor helped me find my perfect nights sleep.

OURA Stealth

Overall it really helped me keep track of my sleep, and make the recommended adjustments. Since I started using the device I’ve noticed a huge boast in my energy levels.

My biggest concern was the price tag, but after using it for a while now, I can say it was worth every penny.

Frequently Asked Questions

For me, the Oura was the better ring, but that’s because I solely wanted a sleep tracker to help me perform better the next day. The problem is, using it as a fitness tracker doesn’t really work, it does measure your daily activity but purely to find out when you should sleep. The Motiv Ring, on the other hand, is slightly different; it performs best as a fitness tracker, with an element of sleep tracking. So really it’s down to personal preference. To find out more about smart rings, you should check out my buying guide.
No, the device does not have GPS, so you can’t track where you’ve been, but the ring will tell you the distance you’ve traveled and how many steps you’ve taken.
The Oura Ring will last you around seven days before it will need charging. And when you compare it to the Motiv, it’s even more impressive. The Motiv ring will only last for three days before it needs to be recharged.
No, it’s not what the ring was designed to do; it only tracks your resting heart rate either while you’re sleeping or during more peaceful times of the day.
